In this third plate, Miró achieves the impossible: a work of protest that is also luminous. Sweeping black gestures tear across the composition like urgent script, while a single red accent burns through the field like a spark of defiance. It is an artwork about resistance, and about hope as an act of courage.

The Technique: Miró's Late Lithographic Mastery

By the 1970s, Miró was one of the most technically fearless printmakers alive. In this lithograph, he combined fluid tusche washes with aggressive, almost violent crayon strokes, allowing the printers at Mourlot in Paris to translate the texture of his hand into stone with uncommon fidelity. The result is raw and immediate you can feel the speed of the gesture, the pressure of the crayon, the deliberateness of every mark. Collectors prize this period precisely because it reveals Miró the citizen as much as Miró the dreamer.

Your Museum-Quality Reproduction

Joan Miro Shop reproduces this historic print with the reverence it deserves.
